Tells us about your career journey to date
I studied for a degree in Law at the University of Greenwich. My first job after university was as a commercial account manager for a clinical waste management company – exciting stuff!
As part of that role, it was my job to win new clients and retain existing ones. Because a large number of our clients were NHS Trusts, I had to get involved in tenders from a commercial angle.
I always enjoyed this part of the job, so when a vacancy came up for a Bid Manager with the same company, I snatched at the chance and applied. I have been working on bids ever since.
What’s your favourite thing about Bowman Riley?
There are so many things I could mention. But one that stands out to me is the obvious care that the leadership of Bowman Riley have for the wellbeing and career development of all staff members.
What was your first job?
A barman at a particularly rough pub in Bradford; it was certainly an education.
What attracted you to a career in the built environment?
When I was considering changing companies after working for my previous one for eight years, my boss and mentor tried to talk me out of the built environment industry. He said it was incredibly competitive, and he wasn’t wrong. However, that competitiveness is one of the reasons I enjoy writing bids in this field. It keeps me on my toes and adds an exciting edge to my work.
What’s been your career highlight to date?
Anytime we win a tender! The George Hotel in Huddersfield has been my most high profile to date.
What piece of advice would you give someone entering the industry?
The Built Environment? Google the Acronyms – Don’t guess!
Bids and Tenders? – Read the question… carefully. They are never as straightforward as they first seem.
What’s your claim to fame?
I had the opportunity to help write a speech for Jeremy Corbyn and it was broadcasted on live TV.
Tells us something people might not know about you
Although born in Leeds, I lived in London for four years…. And hated it!
