How do people interact with Interiors through photography?

In honour of World Photography day, Interior designer Laura Baarda gives us her thoughts on how people interact with interiors through photography.

As the modern consumer live their lives on their phones barely looking up, how do you create an environment that encourages people to interact with the experience, the place and promote your brand? Brands are realising that this is crucial to their business to offer an area for social media engagement, with considered branding, lighting and decoration to ensure maximum promotion with every picture.

How do you create an environment that encourages people to interact with the experience, the place and promote your brand?

Here are some key items to remember when designing Instagram worthy interior.  Always remember that an influencer or consumer will only post a good picture. You must consider the following…

Texture

Areas that influencers tend to be attracted to tend to have a great backdrop. Whether this is a graphic wall, street art, flower or living walls it is always good to consider what best represents your brand.  What does the backdrop represent, clean living, urban aesthetic or futuristic? The backdrop must be worth the picture and should say something about your ethos.

These flowers are beautiful and work so well for beauty brands or a brand trying to convey ethereal aesthetics and a pure ethos.

For a more edgy brand then something a little more engaging and urban would convey and suit your consumer base.

Lots of offices and restaurant are adopting this interior approach to encourage people to engage and interact with the brand.

Branding

To ensure space pays off it is important to consider physical branding, where this will sit on the picture will it be in reverse?  You often see branding in neon on Instagram pictures, as this offers a cool lighting effect that they will want to capture within the image.  The other way to create a more subtle brand link is using reflections, for example, where there is a mirror that is well lit, people will take pictures in front of it as the lighting will be flattering therefore putting some branding on the rear wall (or changing room door) will ensure that the brand name is in the back of all of the pictures!

The positioning of the branding is important, if this had been any higher you might not have got the logo within the final picture.

Lighting

Lower light levels translate better on photography as too much lighting will flood the image and wash you or the interior out. Therefore carefully consider the light levels when designing an interior especially pockets for social media engagement, a lower light level will be interesting to create a moody scene. Lighting directly above a person is unflattering, so consider this especially in areas such as changing rooms and bathrooms as these are areas that people want to look and feel good. Interesting lighting is an easy way of creating an Instagram-able environment without a huge cost for bespoke graphics, planting etc. Consider the shadow as much as you consider the light, as it is the contrast between the two that create the interesting features.

You can image the this as a backdrop for an influencer outfit pictures, would be amazing in a corridor to a changing room for photographs.
