250 Trees, all in a Days Work, for the Team at Bowman Riley

Tree Planting, Yockenthwaite in the Yorkshire Dales

As part of our commitment to CSR, volunteers from our team spent the day with National Trust Ranger, Peter Katic planting trees in Yockenthwaite near Buckden in the Yorkshire Dales.

Volunteers Chris Snowden, Will Gains, Rebecca Jones, Colin Ruddock and Robert Baxendale all took part in the project to create a richer and more natural landscape around Upper Wharfedale.

The aim was to create large blocks of more natural countryside, moving from the rather uniform expanses of grassland seen today to a diverse mosaic of blanket bog, heath and grassland with patchy wood pasture and scrub.  We planted five different species of tree in bunches of 25 to replicate the natural growth of trees.

In addition, the Trust believes the work will contribute, albeit in a modest way, to reducing climate change and downstream flooding – by storing more carbon in the peat soils and trees and with the rougher more spongy ground holding and slowing the flow of water.   By planting lots of native trees and shrubs on the steeper valley sides they aim to stop the erosion of the blanket bogs.

The National Trust holds many volunteer opportunities over the year, if you are interested and want to get involved with their project follow this link: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/work-in-the-great-outdoors

This is one of three other volunteer events we have held over the year including a day of outdoor activities in Malham for children and young people with SELFA charity.
