Craven Barn – North Yorkshire
Private Client, North Yorkshire
Bowman Riley provided architecture and interior design services for the conversion of an agricultural barn into a striking contemporary family home in North Yorkshire’s scenic landscape.
We submitted a planning application under Class Q, which permits barn conversions without full planning approval. The brief aimed for a bold, modern design that reflected our client’s lifestyle while respecting the barn’s character. After analysing the existing structure, we proposed a sensitive scheme that retained the agricultural form while introducing open-plan living.
To maximise space, we added a mezzanine level, creating two storeys within the original single-storey footprint. Expansive glazing frames views of the countryside, while original materials were reused to reduce the carbon footprint, with modern cladding for a contemporary finish. A striking double-height entrance and balconies from all four bedrooms enhance the connection between the interior and landscape.
We created a serene interior concept featuring layered textures and a neutral palette, resulting in cohesive spaces that embody the client’s vision. This was achieved through a detailed design package with high-end finishes and tailored feature elements. Our comprehensive design concept utilised visuals to illustrate scale and massing. We provided complete specifications, including custom joinery, bathrooms, lighting, and finishes.
The result is an expertly designed, personalised home that reflects our client’s identity and vision, harmonising industrial references with modern elegance and showcasing our commitment to thoughtful, high-quality design.
